The name Burichang came from Buddhi Chiyang

History and Background:
Burichang upazila came into existence in 1916 as thana. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the upazila name. It is learnt that in the 11th century a group of Chinese travelers visited the present area of Burichang upazila headquarters. The Chinese travelers during their visit met a considerable number of highly educated and scholarly persons and became very much charmed at their intelligence meaning Buddhi in Bengali. They named the area as Buddhi Chiyang meaning the land of intelligent peoples. It is generally believed that the present upazila name Burichang might be the phonetic corruption of the name Buddhi Chiyang.
